You don’t have to be super-fit for this trip but you need to be able and prepared to be on your feet most of the time. In the course of about 8 days you will have the opportunity to get to know the land around the Sea of Galilee before going ‘up’ to Jerusalem to finish the trip.
Obviously this trip is well in the future but the probable itinerary will be something like this:
1. Nazareth –Zippori
Walk from the village Jesus grew up to the biggest building site in the neighbouring city of Zippori which would be have been undergoing reconstruction under Herod Antipas.
A wonderful cross-country ramble to Khirbet Cana. Climb to the top of the yet-to-be excavated tell which marks the probable site where Jesus attended a wedding. What a place to renew wedding vows!
3. Beatitudes-Tabga-Capernaum-Nof Ginnosar
A stroll from the top of the traditional Mount of Beatitudes down a meandering path to the Sea of Galilee. The view is stunning and on the way take time to reflect on the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount.
Take in the exhilarating view from the top of Cliffs of Arbel – retracing the steps of Jewish para-militaries at the time of Jesus. Then walk an elevated path from Tiberias down the western shore of the Sea of Galilee with wonderful views over the sea with every step.
Walk through one of the famous cities of the Decapolis. Stroll the main street of this elevated city on the east bank of the Sea of Galilee before walking down the zig-zag path to the shore.
In the heart of the Golan, is Gamla. The remains of one of the oldest synagogues in Galilee provides an opportunity to xplore life in the first century. Eagles and vultures are quite common sights. We enter the world of the early Zealots.
7. Dan-Banias – Beth shean
As well as being a beautiful nature reserve, Dan is home to the infamous altar built by Jeroboam in the early days of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Then Beth Shean affords another opportunity to enter the world of the Decapolis and reflect on the differences between the narrow way in the village and the broad way of the city.
Day 10 – Travel home
